HECS, India & Yujoo, Korea Conduct Technical Seminar on “Care for Your Shores” Featuring World-Class Coastal Structural Application Using Tiecell Technology

Innovative Solutions to Address Coastal Erosion and Protect Ecosystems

Chennai, India – November 2024 – Hubert Enviro Care Systems (P) Ltd (HECS), a leading environmental management and water treatment company based in Chennai, has announced a strategic partnership with YUJOO Co Ltd, a renowned Korean firm specializing in marine and harbor construction. The collaboration, formalized in October 2024, aims to enhance coastal preservation efforts in India through the application of Tiecell Technology, developed by YUJOO as the world’s first solution for wave overtopping and erosion prevention.

In light of the growing global concerns around sea erosion, amplified by climate change and rising sea levels, HECS and YUJOO are working together to provide innovative solutions that will protect coastal communities, ecosystems, fisheries, and the tourism industry. The companies conducted a high-profile technical seminar titled “Care for Your Shores – A World-Class Coastal Structural Application Featuring Tiecell Technology,” to showcase the potential of this cutting-edge technology and discuss its application for coastal erosion control in India.

Seminar Highlights

The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Ramesh Ramachandran, Advisor to the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company and Founder-Director of the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM). Dr. Ramachandran addressed the gathering and highlighted the urgent need for effective coastal protection solutions in the face of escalating erosion and rising sea levels. His speech stressed the importance of developing innovative, sustainable technologies to preserve India’s coastline for future generations.

Keynote speaker Dr. Sang Ki Kim, CEO, YUJOO, elaborated on the Tiecell technology, which provides an advanced solution for preventing wave overtopping and coastal erosion. Dr. Kim also discussed the application of Tiecell technology for the foundation of offshore wind power installations in India, an emerging sector with significant potential for the country’s renewable energy future.

The seminar also featured Dr. K.G. Vijay, Asst.Professor at the Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras, who shared insights on coastal protection structures and breakwaters along the Indian coastline. Finally, Dr. H. Kharkwal, Scientist E and Member Secretary of the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC), Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), provided a detailed overview of the regulatory framework governing coastal erosion control in India.

The seminar was attended by a distinguished audience of senior government officials, industry experts, engineers from the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department, and academic professionals from esteemed universities, all of whom engaged in rich discussions on the challenges and solutions for coastal erosion in India.

Integrated Solutions for Coastal Preservation

According to Dr. J.R. Moses, Chief Executive Officer of HECS, “Coastal erosion is one of the most significant challenges facing our coastlines today, and it requires both innovative engineering and environmental stewardship to address it effectively. By joining forces with YUJOO, we aim to provide integrated solutions that use advanced marine technologies alongside nature-based strategies. Together, we will design and implement systems that stabilize shorelines, reduce erosion, and protect communities from the increasing threats of rising sea levels and storm surges.”

As part of the joint initiative, HECS and YUJOO will work on developing hybrid coastal protection systems that combine traditional hard engineering solutions—such as seawalls, breakwaters, and eco-friendly wave barriers—with nature-based solutions like dune restoration, mangrove planting, and living seawalls. These integrated systems will not only mitigate erosion but also create habitats for marine life, enhance biodiversity, and reduce the ecological impact of coastal development.

The collaboration between HECS and YUJOO marks a significant step forward in the development of sustainable coastal protection technologies in India, with the potential to protect both natural resources and communities along the coast.
