“Parents of children with special needs create their own world of happiness and believe in things that others cannot yet see.”
It is with this belief that four mothers of children with special needs joined to establish GURUKULAM in March 2019. The “Integrated Centre for Children with Special Needs” is training students for open schooling, vocational and life skills, through extracurricular activities. The centre prepares the young adults for gainful employment in a way that capitalizes on their skills and interests.
On December 6, 2019, Gurukulam hosted the 1st edition of AKSHAYYAM, a musical fundraiser at TAG Auditorium, Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram, Kilpauk. The Chief guest for the event was Singer Chinmayi and many other celebrities. The lineup included popular playback singers Vijay Yesudas, Ranjith Govind, Rahul Nambiar, Aalaap Raju, Jithin Raj, Keshav Vinod and more, volunteered their time and talent for the evening.
We’re raising funds to:
– Equip the centre: Provide the students (between the ages of 9 and 25) with trained faculty, infrastructure and vocational equipment
– Subsidise education: The cost per child per month is Rs 15,000. We would like to help even those children whose families cannot meet this cost
– Independent location: Move to a place where children are not curbed by space restraints of a residential apartment complex
