Family Planning Association of India, Chennai Branch No.52, Kamarajar Salai, Ashok Nagar, Chennai 600083

The Family Planning Association of India is a Voluntary organization established in the year 1949, its Head Quarters is a Mumbai. This Association is functioning in 18 states of India.it has more than 40 branches across country, Chennai Branch is one among them. The branch was started in the year 1969 and currently functioning in Ashok nagar.

Under the Branch 2 Medical Centers, one in K.K.Nager and the other one in Vadapalani are functioning.

The FPAI was instrumented in advocating for Family Planning to be introduced in the country’s first 5 Year plan in 1952. Thus India became the 1st country in the world to have family planning program. Currently FPAI is a delivering essential health services focusing on Sexual and Reproductive Health.

In order to protect the Reproductive Health of the affected population, during calamities, the Association is implementing a project called MISP (Minimum initial service package) in collaboration with like minded NGOs. We have so far signed MOUS with 3 like minded NGOs.

One of the objectives of the project is to reduce the Maternal Mortality Rate und Infant Mortality Rate during disasters. We hope this objective will help to some extent in achieving the 3rd goal of the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) namely to bring down the current maternal mortality rate to 70 per one lakh live births and the current infant mortality rate to 12 per thousand live births by 2030. Under this scheme the Branch conducted 36 Medical Camps in different parts of Chennai, duly following covid norms, for the affected people during the floods in Chennai in December last year.

Around 3621 people participated in this camp and benefited Around 2667 of them were women and children Among the women 98 were pregnant.

The Association has proposed to implement the following diaster relief services for the affected population under MISP project, in future.

Prevent sexual violence and respond to the need of survivors.

Prevent and reduce morbidity and mortality due to HIV and other STIs.

Prevent excess maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality.

Prevent unintended pregnancies.

Ensure that safe abortion care is available, to the full extent of the low, in health centers and hospitals.
